When I paint pastel dog portraits I try to highlight each dog's unique personality.  That is my main objective with both animal and human portraits.  As you can see here by the examples of my work, good lighting is the first step when painting a good pastel.  When this is accomplished, there will be a reflection in the eyes, and a three dimensional effect to the fur.  Chalk pastel is the perfect medium to accurately show all the colors in their eyes, and the fur's texture and variation of colors as they change in the shadows and highlights.  You can see below what one can accomplish with different poses and lighting with your photos.  The photos you choose to submit when ordering a custom pastel portrait can make all the difference between a boring and stiff painting, and one that shows his unique personality as welll as his exact features.
